In Târgu Ocna, a saltwater pit known as "Groapa Burlacu" formed after a land subsidence in 1974, swallowing several houses. Despite investigations, its origins remain largely unclear. The area initially attracted tourists but lost interest until unsettling details emerged. Over ten families were displaced due to a petroleum and brine odor, with six homes consumed by the ground. Experts have struggled to determine the lake's depth, with one theory suggesting it resulted from a failed salt extraction experiment. Since 2014, local authorities have collaborated with research institutes to monitor the area. In 2018, analyses confirmed the therapeutic potential of the lake's mineral-rich water for certain chronic conditions.
