Approximately 250 World War I projectiles have been removed from melting glaciers in the Italian Dolomites. The munitions were discovered by hikers and naturalists, with the first being a 90mm mortar shell found after a vehicle accident. The Italian Alpine Brigade's 2nd Engineer Regiment conducted the removal operations, which required advanced mountaineering skills due to the challenging terrain. The campaign aimed to ensure safety for hikers and locals, as the extreme heat has accelerated glacier retreat, exposing these historical munitions. Authorities are urging the public to report any found munitions instead of handling them directly.
