While the number of fatal accidents decreases in Europe, Romania remains among the countries with the highest road mortality rates. The EU aims to halve road deaths and serious injuries by 2030. In 2025, Romania reported 68 deaths per million inhabitants, second only to Bulgaria. Overall, the EU recorded 19,350 road fatalities in 2025, a 3% decrease from 2024. Despite improvements since 2019, disparities among member states persist. The European Commission emphasizes the importance of road safety beyond regulations, aiming for safer journeys for all citizens. A conference on road safety will take place in Brussels on November 23, 2026, to discuss progress and recognize excellence in road safety.
