Young people under 35 may soon buy homes with only a 5% down payment through the government program "Noua Casă". The Senate approved a legislative proposal to reduce the minimum down payment from 15% to 5%, aiming to ease access to homeownership for young individuals. This initiative, led by Minister Alexandru-Mihai Ghigiu, targets properties valued between €70,001 and €140,000. Supporters argue that lowering the down payment will help more young people overcome financial barriers. The proposal has passed the Senate but requires further approval from the Chamber of Deputies before implementation. Additionally, the government plans other housing measures for 2026-2028, including social housing financing and legal frameworks for housing cooperatives.
