Under Liverpool lies a network of tunnels and chambers created over 200 years ago, initially built by Joseph Williamson, known as the "Mole of Edge Hill." Volunteers have been excavating these tunnels since their rediscovery in the 1990s, seeking to understand Williamson's motivations for this unusual project. The tunnels, which were filled with debris after Williamson's death, include large rooms and a notable "Banquet Hall". Theories about their purpose range from smuggling to cult activities. Williamson, a tobacco merchant, constructed homes above the tunnels while extracting local sandstone. His secretive nature left little documentation, making it challenging for researchers to uncover the full story behind this enigmatic figure and his underground legacy.
