The European Commission has approved Hungary's request for a €5.4 billion loan for defense, concluding the first allocation round of the SAFE program. Hungary's Prime Minister Peter Magyar reduced the initial request from €16.4 billion, citing corruption concerns from the previous government. The funds will only be released after approval from all EU member states. Over €21 billion remains available for further loans under SAFE, with member states able to apply until December. Ireland has expressed interest in participating in the next funding round. The SAFE program aims to enhance defense capabilities and promote joint procurement among EU countries.
