Romania's gas reserves are over 300 million cubic meters lower than last year, raising concerns about potential emergency imports during a cold winter. Transgaz CEO Ion Sterian highlighted that current storage levels are around 88%, significantly less than in previous years. He warned that if a harsh winter occurs, Romania may face gas shortages by late January, necessitating imports. The rising gas prices, which have doubled since before the Iran conflict, further complicate the situation. Sterian emphasized the need to increase storage capacity to enhance energy independence and resilience against price hikes, noting that Hungary has nearly double the gas storage capacity despite having fewer resources.
