The European Commission insists that the Nord Stream pipeline will remain closed even after the Ukraine war ends, opposing US and Russian efforts to reopen it. Paula Pinho emphasized the hidden costs of dependency on Russian fossil fuels, which have been used as a weapon. The Commission's stance is supported by legislation to phase out all Russian gas imports by the end of 2027. Short-term LNG contracts are being phased out, with long-term contracts ending by January 2027. The final phase targets pipeline gas contracts, including those linked to Nord Stream, to be eliminated by September 2027. This legislation is independent of sanctions or geopolitical events, ensuring a gradual removal of Russian gas from the European market.
