Natural gas stocks in Romania are lower than last year, currently at about 88% capacity. Transgaz director Ion Sterian warned that a harsh winter could lead to import needs by late January. He emphasized the importance of increasing storage capacity to ensure independence and reduce vulnerability to price hikes. Gas prices have surged, reaching record levels, with significant increases compared to pre-war times. Sterian noted that Romania has less gas stored than in the previous year, despite expectations of sufficient reserves. He advocates for reindustrialization to boost gas consumption and highlighted the need for improved storage capacity, comparing Romania's situation unfavorably to Hungary's. The gas system is currently stable and well-prepared for winter, with consumer tariffs still capped, although industrial prices remain high, impacting product costs.
