The Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) revealed that Romanian judges earn below the EU average, publishing updated salary data amid public debates following a recent European Court of Human Rights ruling. The disclosed net salaries vary by professional rank, with entry-level judges earning between 6,990 and 8,285 lei monthly, while appellate judges receive between 16,309 and 20,346 lei. Despite exceeding Romania's average salary, CSM argues that when compared to other EU countries, Romanian judges' salaries are lower. As of October 26, 2026, there are 4,544 judges in Romania, with a significant portion working in lower courts. CSM's previous analysis ranked Romania 20th in gross income for judges at the start of their careers.
