Laura Codruța Kovesi concludes her seven-year term as head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) amid complaints about funding issues and bureaucratic obstacles. In an interview with POLITICO, she highlights the lack of resources and cooperation from some European officials, which hampers investigations. Kovesi notes that the EPPO is underfunded, with only 180 out of the requested 230 European delegated prosecutors. She criticizes the European Commission's inadequate financial support, particularly regarding Hungary, and points out similar issues in Poland. Kovesi expresses concerns about political interference and the reluctance of influential figures to cooperate with investigations. Despite these challenges, she believes the EPPO has become more effective in identifying fraud. Kovesi's term ends on October 31, 2026, with German prosecutor Andrés Ritter set to take over.
