ANAF's antifraud team investigated an individual in Argeș who sold 75 cars worth over €1.3 million without registering the activity or paying taxes. They found a tax evasion of over 1.1 million lei related to unpaid VAT on car sales. The individual operated from May 2022 to January 2025, using online platforms to sell vehicles without legal registration. The investigation revealed that while the cars were sold under false documentation indicating other sellers, the actual transactions occurred in Romania. To avoid detection, the seller often kept the original owners registered until resale. Due to the identified tax evasion, ANAF will refer the case to criminal authorities. The agency launched the ATOM initiative to address risks in the second-hand car market.
