NASA has revised its plans for returning American astronauts to the Moon by 2028, with SpaceX and Blue Origin adopting different strategies for crew transport. The new approach, revealed on October 23, alters how the Orion capsules and commercial lunar modules will travel to the Moon. SpaceX's Starship will now rendezvous with Orion in Earth orbit instead of near the Moon, allowing for more efficient propulsion. Blue Origin's Blue Moon Mark 2 will utilize a three-stage propulsion system, aiming for an elliptical polar orbit around the Moon. Both companies must conduct uncrewed demonstrations before carrying astronauts, with Artemis III planned for 2027 to test vehicle coupling in low Earth orbit.
