NASA has revised its plans for returning astronauts to the Moon by 2028, with SpaceX and Blue Origin adopting different strategies for crew transport. SpaceX's Starship will now rendezvous with Orion in Earth's orbit instead of near the Moon, allowing for more efficient fuel use. Blue Origin's Blue Moon Mark 2 will utilize a three-stage propulsion system to reach the Moon, aiming for a quicker return of astronauts. Both companies must conduct uncrewed demonstrations before carrying astronauts, with Artemis III planned for 2027 to test vehicle coupling in low Earth orbit. NASA will select the company for lunar landing based on development progress and safety requirements.
