NASA has revised its plans for returning astronauts to the Moon by 2028, with SpaceX and Blue Origin adopting different strategies for crew transport. The new approach involves the Starship lunar module meeting the Orion capsule in Earth orbit instead of near the Moon. SpaceX will utilize in-space refueling to reduce fuel needs and return time. Blue Origin's Blue Moon Mark 2 will employ a three-stage propulsion system, allowing for an elliptical polar orbit rendezvous with Orion. Both companies must conduct uncrewed demonstrations before carrying astronauts, with Artemis III planned for 2027 to test vehicle coupling in low Earth orbit. NASA will select the company for lunar landing based on development progress and safety requirements.
