A record number of heat-related deaths has prompted 146 experts from over 30 countries to call for climate change to be declared a global health emergency. The Lancet Countdown report indicates that heat-related deaths increased by nearly 36% since the Paris Agreement in 2015, with 710,000 deaths attributed to extreme heat in 2023 alone. Climate change has been linked to almost 3 million deaths from 2016 to 2023, significantly impacting productivity and the economy. While investments in clean energy have reached record levels, fossil fuels still account for over 80% of global energy. Experts urge for health to be central in climate decisions and for climate change to be recognized as a global health emergency.
