Bulgaria is negotiating with Greece to acquire a stake in the Kavala port, aiming to enhance transport capacity towards the Aegean Sea. Transport Minister Gheorghi Peev announced the negotiations during the Sofia Economic Forum, emphasizing the importance of connectivity among Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania. The interest in Kavala was first expressed by former Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov in 2023, with Bulgaria seeking up to 20% participation through a state-owned company. The port is currently managed by a consortium that includes Euroports and GEK TERNA, with ongoing investments for modernization. This acquisition aims to provide Bulgaria with an alternative transport corridor amid rising military tensions, as part of a broader connectivity plan involving 25 strategic projects worth nearly €23 billion.
