In August 1911, Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian handyman, successfully stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre without raising suspicion. He had previously worked at the museum and knew its layout well. After hiding the painting in his apartment for over two years, he attempted to sell it in Italy, leading to his arrest. The theft initially went unnoticed, causing a media frenzy when discovered. The investigation mistakenly focused on artists Guillaume Apollinaire and Pablo Picasso, diverting attention from Peruggia. Ultimately, the Mona Lisa was recovered in December 1913, enhancing its fame significantly. Peruggia was sentenced to a short prison term for his crime.
