A new inland waterway canal, Seine-Nord Europe, is being constructed in Europe, connecting France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The project, costing €7.3 billion, aims to enhance regional freight transport and reduce road dependency. The canal will span 107 kilometers and is expected to be completed by 2032, two years later than initially planned due to rising costs. It will feature larger barges capable of carrying up to 4,400 tons of cargo, significantly more than the current capacity. The project is funded by the EU and France, but environmental concerns and economic viability remain issues. France will collect navigation fees similar to those of the Suez Canal, although the scale and revenue potential differ significantly.
