Robert Turcescu discussed the decline of the European Union, attributing economic difficulties to the cessation of cheap Russian energy supplies. He noted that the EU's prosperity relied heavily on these resources, and their absence has led to financial issues across various sectors, including tourism. The EU has made significant investments to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels, diversifying energy sources from the US, Norway, and Qatar. Turcescu emphasized that the EU is facing major operational challenges and instability, exacerbated by the ongoing war in Ukraine and subsequent sanctions against Russia. He highlighted the drastic reduction in Russian gas imports and the impact on European industries, particularly tourism, which has suffered from a decrease in Russian visitors.
