The AUR party has nominated MEP Gheorghe Piperea as its candidate for the Bucharest mayoral elections in 2028. This decision follows the party's support for Anca Alexandrescu in the 2025 partial elections, where she finished second. Piperea, born in 1970, is a lawyer with a strong academic background, including a doctorate in law. He has held various legal positions and has been involved in insolvency practice. After a brief association with the PSD, he joined AUR in 2021 and was elected to the European Parliament in 2024, where he serves as vice-president of the European Conservatives and Reformists group.
