The demand for mortgage loans in Europe has significantly decreased due to rising interest rates, with a net 27% of banks reporting a decline in Q3 2026. This drop was more severe than expected, influenced by tightening credit conditions and consumer confidence issues. The European Central Bank's monetary policy adjustments, initiated in June, are aimed at combating inflation exacerbated by the war. Although banks have not tightened mortgage lending criteria recently, they plan to do so for all loan types by year-end. France has experienced the most pronounced tightening in credit standards, driven by increased risk perception and geopolitical uncertainties.
