Microsoft has announced a voluntary departure program for a significant number of employees to balance costly investments in AI infrastructure with capital efficiency needs. The initiative targets employees at professional levels 70 and below in the US, Canada, India, and the UK, with around 60,000 eligible individuals. This represents approximately 27% of Microsoft's total workforce of 223,000. The company has increased spending on data centers to meet high demand for AI computing capacity. Employees must decide by early December whether to accept the offer, with departures set for December 31. Microsoft aims to transition without compromising its financial position, having reported a positive free cash flow despite industry challenges.
