Recent data from the European Commission reveals that Romania has one of the highest road fatality rates in the EU, with 68 deaths per million inhabitants in 2025. Bulgaria leads with 71 deaths, while Sweden and Denmark report significantly lower rates. Despite a general decline in road fatalities across the EU, Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia continue to struggle with high mortality rates. In total, 19,350 people died in road accidents in the EU in 2025, marking a 3% decrease from the previous year. Preliminary data for 2026 suggests a positive trend in reducing fatalities. The European Commission emphasizes the importance of road safety and aims to halve road deaths by 2030, with a conference scheduled for November 2026 to discuss progress and recognize achievements in road safety.
