Mortgage demand in the eurozone significantly declined in Q3 due to rising interest rates and stricter lending conditions, according to a survey by the ECB. Between June and September, 27% of banks reported a drop in mortgage applications, exceeding expectations and previous declines. The ECB's tightening monetary policy, initiated in June, is expected to continue despite a planned pause in October. Rising interest rates, decreased consumer confidence, and worsening real estate market outlook were identified as key factors for the decline. While banks did not tighten mortgage lending criteria during this period, they anticipate stricter standards for all loan types by the end of 2026.
