Romania remains one of the EU countries with the highest road mortality rates, recording 68 deaths per million inhabitants in 2025. Bulgaria has the highest rate at 71. Despite a general decline in road fatalities across the EU, Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia still report significant mortality rates. The EU saw a 3% decrease in road deaths compared to 2024, with a total of 19,350 fatalities in 2025. Preliminary data for the first half of 2026 indicates a positive trend in reducing road deaths. The European Commission emphasizes the importance of road safety beyond regulations, aiming to protect lives and prevent tragedies. A conference on road safety will be held in Brussels in November 2026 to discuss progress and recognize achievements in road safety.
