Romania has dropped from the top position in road fatalities in Europe, now second to Bulgaria. Despite a decrease in road deaths, Romania still has a high mortality rate of 68 per million inhabitants. The EU saw a 3% reduction in road fatalities in 2025, with Romania reporting 1,296 deaths, a 12% decrease from 2024. Sweden and Denmark have the lowest rates, while several countries, including Romania and Bulgaria, continue to struggle with high numbers. Romania is among five EU countries on track to halve road deaths by 2030. The EU aims for zero road deaths by 2050, emphasizing the importance of road safety beyond regulations. Elderly individuals and vulnerable road users are particularly at risk, with rural roads being the most dangerous. The European Commission will continue monitoring and supporting member states in addressing traffic risks.
