A German company has launched the world's first facility using rapeseed oil for bio-based chemical production, aiming to replace petroleum-derived materials. The plant in Bitterfeld has a capacity of 60,000 tons per year and will produce chemicals like 1-decene and 9-DAME. This initiative could create new demand for European rapeseed oil, traditionally used for biodiesel, although the exact consumption volume remains unspecified. The process, known as ethenolysis, transforms rapeseed oil into valuable chemical compounds, contributing to reduced reliance on petrochemicals. The project signals a shift towards sustainable practices in the European chemical industry amid rising production costs and international competition.
