In September 2026, the minimum consumption basket for a family of four reached 11,668 lei, reflecting a 2.6% increase from the previous year. This rise is attributed to higher expenses in clothing, housing, services, education, and health care. While housing costs decreased slightly due to lower interest rates, overall living costs have increased significantly. The analysis also indicates that a decent minimum wage for 2026 is estimated at 5,542 lei net, which is still below the required amount for a decent living. The authors emphasize the need for a strategy to raise the minimum wage to meet living standards by 2050 or later, considering economic growth rates.
