A family with two children needs the equivalent of four minimum salaries in Romania for a decent living, according to an analysis based on INS data. The minimum consumption basket for a family of four reached 11,668 lei in September 2026, reflecting a 2.6% increase from the previous year. Key factors for this increase include rising costs in clothing, housing, education, and health care. The analysis also indicates that the decent minimum salary for 2026 is estimated at 5,542 lei net. Despite improvements, the current minimum wage covers only 48.7% of this amount. Projections suggest that the minimum wage may not reach the necessary level for a decent living until 2050 or later, emphasizing the need for legislative action to address this issue.
