The Pentagon has designated USS Colorado as the first U.S. nuclear-powered attack submarine to join a rotational force in Western Australia under the AUKUS defense pact. This Virginia-class submarine, equipped with missiles and torpedoes, is set to depart for Australia by late 2027. The deployment marks a significant step in enhancing U.S.-Australia-UK deterrence capabilities in the Pacific, responding to China's military expansion. The rotational submarine force will be based at HMAS Stirling and will eventually host up to five submarines to assist Australia in preparing for its future nuclear submarine operations. This initiative is seen as a major milestone in the AUKUS agreement, which aims to strengthen military cooperation and provide Australia with nuclear submarines over the next 15 years.
