The European Commission will unveil a significant reform of Frontex, transforming it into a full-fledged European return agency. The legislative proposal aims to enhance Frontex's role in deportations, improve crisis management at borders, and increase operational capacity without taking border guards from member states. The reform seeks to empower Frontex to conduct return operations outside the EU and respond to border emergencies within 24 hours. Additionally, the agency's personnel is expected to grow from 7,800 to 10,000 by 2027, with discussions on a reserve force to address national concerns. The reform may also reignite debates on the agency's accountability and migrant rights.
