Eight police officers were definitively sentenced in September 2026 for assaulting two men they detained and abandoned in different locations in Bucharest. The incident occurred on August 31, 2020, after the victims pointed out that the officers were not wearing masks during the COVID-19 alert. One officer received a sentence of 5 years and 8 months. The victims were subjected to physical abuse and humiliation, including being beaten and sprayed with tear gas. Following an investigation initiated after a medical emergency call, nine officers were charged with torture and other offenses. The court confirmed the sentences in December 2024, with eight officers receiving prison terms, while one case was dismissed due to the statute of limitations.
