Saint Demetrius the New, protector of Bucharest, is celebrated on October 27 for his ascetic life dedicated to prayer and humility. His relics, brought to Bucharest in 1774, attract thousands of pilgrims annually. He lived in the 13th century in Basarabov, Bulgaria, leading a simple life as a shepherd before embracing monasticism. His relics were discovered after a girl had a vision revealing their location. Initially intended for Russia, they were kept in Bucharest after intervention by local leaders. His veneration was officially recognized in 1955, and he is honored alongside Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr on consecutive days, each with distinct celebrations.
