Romania's administrative reform may lead to the merging of hundreds of small localities, particularly those with populations under 1,500. The PSD party is proposing this change, although no official list of affected areas exists yet. Alba County has the highest number of such localities, followed by Caraș-Severin and Hunedoara. Two merging options are being discussed: voluntary merging with public consultation and a legal merging proposed by PSD. The Minister of Development emphasized the need for reform, stating that localities with very few residents cannot continue to operate effectively. The government aims to finalize these reforms by March 2027, focusing on both local and central administration restructuring.
