Overtourism is emerging as a concern in Romania, particularly in Sibiu and Brașov, which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. While tourism boosts local economies, it also raises issues related to congestion and cultural preservation. A study shows that most residents appreciate tourism's benefits, with 94% believing it enhances the city's image. However, Brașov feels the impact of visitor numbers more acutely, prompting initiatives like discounts for locals to support local businesses. In 2025, Sibiu welcomed around 628,805 tourists, while Brașov attracted about 715,000. Despite some dissatisfaction, locals generally maintain a positive view of tourism, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions to balance economic benefits with quality of life.
