The Senate approved a legislative proposal to amend the Mining Law, establishing a specific regime for geothermal activities to harness geothermal potential. The proposal will be debated by the Chamber of Deputies, which is the decision-making body. It received 74 votes in favor, 3 against, and 26 abstentions. The initiative aims to adapt the legal framework to current technological realities by recognizing geothermal energy as a distinct resource. This encourages investment in modernization and new technologies, ensuring predictability for investors. The project stipulates that geothermal energy extracted from depths over 400 meters is treated as mineral resources, subject to exploration and exploitation regulations. Public institutions can also engage in geothermal activities, with resources managed by competent authorities.
