The Romanian government is initiating a significant administrative reorganization through the "START Administrative Reform" program, targeting 429 small localities for voluntary merging. This reform, the first since 1967, aims to address the financial struggles of small communities by providing incentives for merging. Minister Alexandru Stoica emphasized the need for this change, as many localities are unable to sustain themselves. The program will prioritize funding for these mergers, allowing multiple communes to combine into a single entity, enhancing public service quality. Additionally, the government plans to implement structural reforms, including the unification of tax authorities and reducing state institutions.
