The European Court of Auditors reports that EU marine protected areas lack effective protection, jeopardizing conservation goals for 2030. Progress has been made in designating protected areas, but actual protection remains inadequate. Currently, only 14% of EU marine waters are protected, with less than 1% strictly protected. The existing network does not function as a coherent ecological system, and major habitats remain unprotected. Effective conservation requires harmonized measures and cooperation among EU member states. Insufficient stakeholder involvement may weaken public support for marine conservation efforts. The EU's marine area is vast, with significant socio-economic implications for coastal communities.
