The German defense giant Rheinmetall has officially notified the Commission for the Examination of Direct Investments regarding its controversial acquisition of the Mangalia Shipyard. This acquisition, won at a significantly reduced price, has faced criticism from Damen Holding, the main creditor. Concerns have been raised about the financial implications for the Romanian state, which is set to pay over 900 million euros for military vessels built at a yard purchased for only 138 million. The transaction requires mandatory approvals from both CEISD and the Competition Council, focusing on national security and market impact. Rheinmetall plans to use the shipyard for both civilian and military shipbuilding, including four military vessels contracted by the Romanian government.
