Latvian authorities have accused Belarus officials of directing undocumented migrants to the border and forcing them to damage the border fence under threat of violence. Prosecutor Andris Aleksejevs stated that these migrants had not paid Belarusian border guards for illegal entry into Latvia. Since the beginning of the year, over 12,000 attempts to cross the border illegally have been prevented. Migrants reportedly pay around $5,000, often via cryptocurrency, to cross from Russia through Belarus to camps near the Latvian border. Latvia has intensified border security measures, mobilizing military and police forces, as incidents of sabotage have increased significantly compared to last year.
