Researchers have identified a surprising reason why dental implant infections often resist antibiotics: the implants themselves may contribute to this issue. Tiny titanium particles released by bacteria can take control of the immune system, leading to bone loss in the jaw. This study reveals that these particles interfere with immune cells, causing excessive inflammation that progressively destroys surrounding bone. The findings suggest a new therapeutic target for treating peri-implantitis, a condition affecting up to 20% of implant patients and costing healthcare systems over $1 billion annually. Understanding this mechanism could lead to more effective treatments beyond antibiotics.
