Romania's budget deficit decreased by 1.5 percentage points of GDP in the first nine months of 2026, from 5.31% to 3.81%. The Finance Minister highlighted the importance of fiscal consolidation measures and the need for continued discipline. Public revenues increased by 11.9%, while expenditures rose by 5.5%, contributing to the deficit reduction. Investments reached 107.77 billion lei, supported significantly by European funds. However, the minister warned that failure to fully attract planned PNRR funds could increase budget pressure. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring that any additional spending has a corresponding revenue source to maintain financial credibility and avoid negative impacts on the economy.
