The Romanian Customs Authority has initiated an internal investigation following the disappearance of €700,000 confiscated from an individual arriving from Dubai. The money was seized in January 2026 during a customs control and was stored at the Otopeni Airport Customs Office. The disappearance was discovered while preparing for the return of the funds after a case closure order was issued. Upon inspection, only one banknote and paper sheets were found in the bag that held the money. The storage area lacks video surveillance, although the access corridor is monitored. Police are investigating the circumstances of the disappearance, while the internal audit focuses on adherence to retention and storage procedures.
