The German defense giant Rheinmetall has officially notified the Commission for the Examination of Direct Investments (CEISD) about its acquisition of the Mangalia Shipyard, following a judicial liquidation auction. The transaction, valued at 138 million euros, requires mandatory approvals from CEISD and the Competition Council to proceed. Rheinmetall plans to transform the shipyard into a dual-use center for both military and civilian shipbuilding, playing a crucial role in constructing four military vessels contracted by the Romanian government. The CEISD will assess the deal's implications for national security and market competition, especially since Rheinmetall already has operations in Romania. The Romanian government has allocated significant funding for naval projects under the European SAFE program, necessitating timely contract completions by 2030.
