A Hungarian farmer, Szirmai Balázs, has successfully shifted to growing food-grade poppy, achieving low production costs and high profits. After four years of cultivating poppy on 500 hectares, he found it to be a viable alternative to traditional crops. Last season, he produced about 1.2 tons of seeds per hectare, with a selling price of 1.5 euros per kg. This profitability, combined with reduced input costs, has made poppy cultivation a key part of his farming strategy. Balázs also sees potential in building direct relationships with food processors.
