Petrișor Peiu, leader of the AUR Senate group, claims that the Bolojan government misrepresented Romania's budget deficit. According to his calculations based on Eurostat data, the deficit for the first half of 2026 is 35 billion lei higher than reported. Peiu argues that the government announced a 2% deficit, while Eurostat indicated a much higher figure of 7.4% and 7.8% for the first two quarters. He attributes the government's errors to simultaneous increases in consumption taxes and energy prices, which have led to higher costs for the government. Peiu emphasizes that the true deficit, as recognized by financial institutions, is significantly larger than what the government disclosed.
