Italy faces a potential cannabis supply crisis following the bankruptcy of Dutch company Bedrocan, a key supplier in the European market. This situation threatens patients relying on cannabis for chronic pain relief and serious illness symptoms. Bedrocan's two Dutch subsidiaries declared bankruptcy in early October, impacting Italy's dependence on external cannabis supplies. In 2024, Italian pharmacies received 1,695 kg of medicinal cannabis, with only 211 kg sourced domestically. The sole authorized producer in Italy, a military facility, cannot meet national demand. The Dutch government is reforming its market, allowing private producers to sell directly, but new legislation won't be effective until 2028. Patient organizations are urging for increased domestic production and private sector involvement to reduce reliance on imports.
