In the first nine months of 2026, Romania's budget deficit decreased to 3.81% of GDP, down from 5.31% the previous year. Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare reported a deficit of 78.3 billion lei, a significant reduction from 102.47 billion lei in 2025. Revenue growth outpaced expenditure, with a notable increase in public investments supported by European funds. Nazare emphasized the need for fiscal consolidation and prudent spending, especially in the last quarter of the year. He warned that failure to secure expected European funding could increase budgetary pressure. The government aims to maintain high investment levels while managing significant financial obligations and ensuring sustainable economic growth.
