A medical device can extend the lives of patients awaiting heart transplants by assisting heart function. Used in Germany, this ventricular assist device (LVAD) can keep patients alive until a donor is found. Cardiologist Dorin Golcea discussed the challenges of accessing this treatment in Romania, including high costs and the need for specialized medical support. He shared a case where a patient could afford the device, but local medical resources posed a significant barrier. Golcea emphasized that while LVADs can prolong life, proper monitoring and specialized care are essential for patient safety and effectiveness. The availability of organs for transplant remains limited, making LVADs a crucial option for some patients.
